Asian-Americans are the United States' most successful minority, but they are complaining ever more vigorously about discrimination, especially in academia.

A similar effect is visible in the law. In 2014, whereas 11% of law-firm associates were Asian, 3% of partners were. Recruiters at the top firms typically throw out applications from all but the top universities and scan the remainder for their extracurriculars, says Lauren Rivera of Northwestern University. "They're particularly interested in sports, such as lacrosse, squash and [rowing] crew. When you look at the demographic base of these sports, Asian-Americans are not heavily represented."

Temple's rowers are a perfect example of what college athletes are supposed to be: unbreakable, unspoiled and unfazed by adverse conditions. While the indoor practice facility for Temple's football team was renovated just last year for $10 million, the crews operated out of a canvas tent that doesn't have heat or running water. The rowers use public portable toilets. Theobald told me that the university cut men's and women's crew because the facilities were so poor and the student-athletes deserved better.

Rowing technique by Concept 2


1 The Recovery

Extend your arms until they straighten.
Lean your upper body forward to the one o'clock position.
Once your hands and the oar handle have cleared your knees, allow your knees to bend and gradually slide the seat forward on the monorail.

2 The Catch

Arms are straight; head is neutral; shoulders are level and not hunched.
Upper body is at the one o'clock position--shoulders in front of hips.
Shins are vertical and not compressed beyond the perpendicular.
Balls of the feet are in full contact with the footplate.

3 The Drive

With straight arms and while maintaining the position of the upper body at one o'clock, exert pressure on the foot plate and begin pushing with your legs.
As your legs approach straight, lean the upper body back to the eleven o'clock position and draw the hands back to the lower ribs in a straight line.

4 The Finish

Legs are extended and handle is held lightly at your lower ribs.
Upper body is at the eleven o'clock position--slightly reclined with good support from your core muscles.
Head is in a neutral position.
Neck and shoulders are relaxed, and arms are drawn past the body with flat wrists.
